Training Doll Boy
Male rhythmic gymnastic - training - Scorpion Model Trains And Railroads - Who Says This Hobby Is Just For Boys And Men?A majority of people believe that the model trains are meant for boys and men. This perception is reinforced by the popular stereotype that boys play with masculine toys such as cars and trains, whereas girls play feminine toys such as dolls. However, the idea that model trains are a "man's hobby" does not have to be true. Although boys and men do play with toy trains, even girls would love to play with the toy trains too, if given the chance. First Memories of Trains Any child regardless of sex can relate to having owned or seen a model train at some point in their life. In fact, the most vivid memory of a toy train is often around Christmas. As families set up a Christmas tree with ornaments and colorful lights, some will even pull out a miniature train to complement the display. It would be hard to believe that only boys would be fascinated with the trains at this young age. Model Train Hobby Today Although the model train hobby is available for everyone, membership is still predominantly comprised of men. Society has established gender stereotypes which are slow to change. The only way this is going to change is to introduce this wonderful hobby to a younger generation of women and encourage them to actively pursue their passions. Their participation is good for the hobby as it contributes to overall membership growth and new ideas and designs, while breaking the traditional stereotypes that still continues to dominate culture and society. How Women Think Let's face the facts. This hobby has so much to offer that different aspects will appeal more to women than to men. For instance, Mary Miller, a Master Model Railroader in the US-based National Model Railroad Association states, "I find most aspects fascinating - photography, history, fan trips, soldering, track laying, building structures and cars, wiring, everything except track planning... Meeting new people and old acquaintances at conventions is also a big part of the fun." Shaping the Future Today Imagine the skills a young girl could develop if she were exposed to this wonderful hobby at an early age. As the rules about gender roles slowly change, we are seeing more shifts in society. Women and men are venturing into professions that were traditionally male-dominated and gaining acceptance for their contributions. Women have become astronauts, engineers, lawyers, and doctors. This should be no different with what many profess is the "World's Greatest Hobby". Let's encourage more women and young girls to seek out local model railroad clubs in their area and welcome their active participation. The young girl who aspires to become a model railroaders today may eventually become tomorrow's scientist or engineer! About the Author Gabriel O.
