The Culture of MormonismThere is a unique culture that exists in the Mormon (or LDS) religion. It’s a culture full of casseroles, large families, 2 years of unpaid service and preaching, and other conservative lifestyle choices. Where does this interesting cultural originate? Why do Mormons use words like, “oh my heck” and “gosh darnit!”? There are some simple explanations for cultural differences Mormons may have compared the rest of the world.
One that you may have heard or personally witnessed is the fact that Mormons don’t drink alcohol or coffee. Although some say this may make for boring weekends, they seem to find ways to have a good time without getting smashed and running around without their clothes. This belief originates from a revelation given to the first prophet Joseph Smith instructing all members of the church to stop drinking any “strong” and “hot” drinks. They believe it will help them gain extra strength and health, and as scientific studies have recently shown… they’re right.
Ever heard a Mormon stub their toe? Have you ever seen a Brigham Young University fan watching a football game? If so, you probably heard some creative derivations of the real potty words you may be more familiar with. Words like “gosh darn”, “oh my heck”, and “ah shiz” are substitute words for their evil counterparts. Mormons believe that cleanliness is godliness, and that applies to many aspects of their life including their language.
Everyone knows a family down the street that has an 18-passenger van, and like clockwork, every Sunday at 9:40am mom, dad, and all 8 well-dressed children pile in the van and mysteriously disappear for 3 hours. Well, they’re going to church, and that large family isn’t uncommon in the Mormon religion. Mormons believe the commandment given to Adam and Eve to multiply and replenish the earth still exists as a commandment. Members of the LDS church strongly believe that families will exist in the next life and look forward to the time when they will be reunited with their ancestors. Thus why Mormons find joy in families, even large, very large families.
Now, everyone has had 2 young men dressed in a white shirt and tie knock on their door at least once, if not twice or 3 times. Although commonly mistaken for the mafia or the FBI, these well-dressed young men are kind, soft-hearted, and willing to do pretty much anything as missionaries for the Church. A commandment for the 19 year old boys of the church is to serve a 2 year mission helping anyone and everyone in sight, and to preach what they believe. Forbidden to date, party, or work during these 2 years, every single day they preach about Jesus and doing good to others.
You may have been given a casserole from a Mormon neighbor, or seen them wearing a CTR ring on their hand. You may have heard that Mormons wear different underwear, or have sacred worship in their temples. These too are other elements that exist in the Mormon Church and come from strong belief in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost and modern day revelation given to their prophets, just like in bible times. Even though you may not share the same beliefs that Mormons do, or understand their culture, much of what they do and who they are come from deep roots of faith and a strong belief in their church.
