The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that parents do not use the Infantino "SlingRider" and "Wendy Bellissimo" baby slings for infants under 4 months of age due to the risk of suffocation. CPSC further adds that sling-style baby carriers pose a risk of suffocation to premature babies, babies with low birth weight, and babies whose breathing is affected due to colds. 14 infant deaths have occurred in the last 20 years due to baby slings (all brands, not just Infantino). Some baby slings cause suffocation when the fabric presses against the baby's nose and mouth. Others, like the Infantino Slingrider, place the baby in an unnatural "curved" position. This causes the baby's head to press into his chest and restrict his breathing. A baby in this position will not be able to cry out for help. Infants under 4 months, premature babies, and those with low birth weight often do not have the strength to lift their heads or free themselves from the fabric of a baby sling. These babies can suffocate in a matter of minutes. Infantino is offering a free replacement baby carrier, activity gym or shopping cart cover to parents who own a recalled SlingRider or Wendy Bellissimo baby sling. My 6 month old wants to be with me all the time so I thought about getting this sling so I could get things done around the house but I wanted to make sure it was worth buying first. I hate the Infantino--it's too big and it hurts your back. A better choice is a wrap, like a Moby, a tube sling, like a Hotsling (or Hugamonkey) or a ring sling. Practically every other sling on the market is better than the Infantino. I use a sling all the time to keep my baby up with me while I'm working around the house. I happen to use a Hotsling, but there are lots of other tube slings on the market that work just as well (you can even sew your own.) I like the Hotsling because it's quick and easy to put on, and since they come in different sizes you can accurately get one to fit you properly (fit is the most important thing in a sling.)
